“Do not be envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them” (Proverbs 24:1).
Veronica was a Christian girl who used to watch soap operas. In addition, she collected magazine clippings of her favorite actors and did not miss the episodes of her favorite series. One day, on her way back from school with her mother and younger sister, they entered a small restaurant to get a drink. Suddenly, her mother said to her: «Hey Veronica, do you recognize the young man sitting at the back table with two other young men?»
The girl turned to see the young man out of the corner of her eye. Suddenly, her face lit up. She couldn’t believe it! He was the main character in one of her favorite soap operas!
«Mom, it’s him!» She whispered to her mother full of emotion.
The young woman could not hide her emotion. She made such a fuss that the actor realized what was happening and tried to hide from Veronica by placing a cap on his head. Finally, the mother approached the elusive celebrity and said: «Excuse me, may I take a picture of you with my daughters?»
Visibly uncomfortable and annoyed, the young man uttered some evasive excuses, but ended up accepting Veronica’s mothers’ request. But Veronica had observed the actor’s attitude and realized that, in fact, that young man was nothing like what she saw on television. She posed for the picture, but she didn’t tell her friends. On the contrary, when she got home, she decided to give up everything that was linked to that soap opera. Then she told her father: «I felt like a fool. That young man wasn’t even worth it.»
The entertainment world is designed to trap the minds of young people. It presents the life of celebrities as a dream come true: they are rich, attractive, successful, and recognized all over the world. In comparison, your life seems miserable and irrelevant but that’s all fake. It is a montage that is controlled advertising objectives. One of the great objectives of the stories that appear on television is that you will want to imitate the attitudes, the clothing, and the way of life of the characters.
You have nothing to envy those who reject God’s principles and supposedly live incredible lives. The death of Christ on the cross should remind you of the enormous worth you are to Him and how far He is willing to go to save you. He will never be ashamed to be with you or be bothered to speak with you when you have a problem. On the contrary, He will listen to you with great interest.
