«Forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus» (Philippians 3:13,14).
IN HER CHILDHOOD, Mary Somerville (1780—1872) barely received a formal education. She had been taught to read a little, but as she entered into puberty she did not yet know how to write. When she was ten years old, she spent a school year at an educational institution in Scotland, but she had to return to her home in the country without being able to progress further. However, that one-year experience left her with a desire to learn, which made her into a self-taught person. Besides, her uncle Thomas helped her, giving her Latin lessons.
Once married, Mary continued to study mathematics, but later wrote: «My husband did not prevent me from studying, but neither did he support me, because he considered that women do not have much aptitude.» Her first husband passed away and she married again, this time to a cousin named William who did take pride in the intellectual abilities of his cousin. With his support, she began to study botany and geology. Thereafter, she published articles in scientific journals and later on, books. When she was eighty-five years old, she wrote her autobiography and began her fourth book; and at ninety-two, she continued to study mathematics. Many called her «the queen of science of the nineteenth century.
As you can see, it is never too late to direct your steps toward the goals you longed to achieve and that fit the purposes of God for the lives of His daughters. It was not too late for Mary Somerville in the intellectual realm, nor was it, for example, for the apostle Paul in the religious realm. Paul, who had to embark on a completely different path than he had known since his childhood, stopped persecuting the church of Christ in order to lead it. He had to unlearn everything he had learned from childhood (an extremely difficult thing) in order to learn a new concept of God as an adult, but he was not discouraged.
It is never too late to begin going down certain paths, and it is definitely never too late to love Jesus and give ourselves to Him. Our God is the God of new beginnings. If you are still breathing, you must know that you still have a multitude of possibilities before you. They all start with one requirement: not giving up up, knowing that God is with you. “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose» (Romans 8:28).
