«The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge» (Proverbs 18:15).
DECISIONS
Martin Luther was a young law student at the University of Erfurt. His father was proud that he would soon have a lawyer son and predicted a promising future. But in Martin’s mind there were other kinds of plans. The death of a very close friend had left him dismayed. Shortly thereafter, on July 2, 1505, he was caught in the midst of a violent storm near Erfurt as he returned from visiting his parents. He was so frightened that he fell to the ground shaking and exclaimed, «Help me, beloved Saint Anne! I’ll become a monk!» On July 16, he solemnly gathered his friends and informed them of his decision. They tried to dissuade him, but it was useless. The next day, they accompanied him with tears at the monastery’s doorstep. When his father found out about his son’s decision, he almost went crazy. He did his best to change Martin’s mind about his decision, but it was all in vain. Luther himself acknowledged that he was forced to make that decision because of the fear of death and the coming judgment, though he never doubted that the hand of God was behind it.
But his life in the monastery was not easy. He wanted to be holy and obtain heaven. ‘He led a most rigorous life, endeavoring by fasting, vigils, and scourging’s to subdue the evils of his nature, from which the monastic life had brought no release. He shrank from no sacrifice by which he might attain to that purity of heart which would enable him to stand approved before God…. As the result of this painful discipline he lost strength and suffered from fainting spasms, from the effects of which he never fully recovered»—The Great Controversy, ch. 7, p. 123. God was not oblivious to the sincerity of his heart and led him to the study of Scripture, where he discovered that salvation is a gift that God gives us undeservedly through the sacrifice Of Jesus. He made a new decision: to proclaim with strength this great truth. That was how this humble monk became the great leader of the Protestant Reformation, a movement that shook Europe and changed the panorama of Christianity.
Sometimes our decisions can have wrong motives, but God recognizes the sincerity of the heart and does not abandon His children.
Today put your decisions in the Lord’s hands so that He will lead you in the paths you should walk
