«My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent»(Proverbs 1:10).
While I was in line to buy tickets at a certain museum, I noticed that some people murmured with remarkable emotion and turned to where I was. Besides, a sturdy man with a serious face couldn’t take his eyes off me. I tried to ignore what was going on, but after a while I started to get a little uncomfortable. I also noticed that, at some distance, my wife was trying to signal something to me, but I couldn’t understand any of it. Suddenly my wife came up to me and whispered in my ear that right in front of me were two popular television actors.
The truth is that both young people seemed to me to be normal. What’s more, if I hadn’t been told who they were, I wouldn’t even have noticed that in front of me were Ovo TV stars.
Are you a fan of a movie or television personality? Have you ever wondered why many young people collect photographs of those types of people?
Why do these personalities in society appear as models and examples to follow? The reason is that they have become worship figures of the contemporary world. In other words, one thing is the admiration and recognition that an artist receives when they show an outstanding talent; and another very different thing is the over-dimension that is placed on a personality that takes it to grotesque levels, as manifested in a of religious devotion. In fact, this type of religiosity is quite revealing because, due to the new forms of religion, today, the people of the show world— whether sports personalities, musicians, or actors—come to receive the reverence that only God deserves.
Joshua made an invitation to the people of Israel: «Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord!» (Joshua 24:14). If they did not, the presence of God would turn away from them and they would remain at the mercy of Satan’s temptations. Sadly, the people of Israel persisted in their idolatry for a long time until they were taken captive to Babylon in the year 586 BC.
Do you have any of these contemporary «idols» in your room? Are they hidden in the drawer of your work desk? In that case, I invite you to confess to the Lord your faults and ask Him to get those idols out of your life. Let no one occupy the place of privilege that only corresponds to the heavenly Father.
