Automobiles provide transportation and convenience. But they also can become deadly weapons in the hands of those who selfishly drink alcohol and then slip behind the wheel. Listen to this amazing story from a girl named Jamie.
When my mom was just a kid she’d been ice-skating with her friend Jo-Ellen. After Jo-Ellen left with her parents, Mom was riding home in my grandpa’s Ranchero when a drunk driver sped through a red light, hit another car, and then went flying through the air right at my mom’s car. When Grandpa saw it coming, he opened his door and pulled my mom by the arm to get her out, but he wasn’t fast enough. The car smashed into the roof, splitting my mom’s head almost in half.
When she arrived at the hospital the doctors shaved her head so they could perform surgery. They told my grandparents that she had also injured her spine and neck. The disks in her neck had been pressed together.
From then on, life was very painful for her. She went to a chiropractor, but that didn’t help much. The worst for her was knowing that she’d never be able to participate in the activities she enjoyed most: ice-skating, horseback riding, and taking part in rodeos.
My mom thanks God every day that the accident wasn’t fatal and that her friend Jo-Ellen wasn’t in the car, because the drunk driver’s car completely smashed in where she would have been sitting..
