‘Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established» (Proverbs 15:22).
Making decisions will be a fundamental part of your life. To do this, you have to have courage. If you don’t, others will do it for you and decide your own existence. In particular, the choices you make today will define your life one way or another. That is why it is essential to consider some principles for making decisions.
Don’t make decisions under the influence of emotions. There are certain moods in which it is not advisable to make a decision and they can influence the mind unfavorably, so that the choice becomes incorrect. In this way, making a decision when you are very angry (like Jonah, who asked for death in an outburst of anger), very sad (like Elijah, who wanted to die under the influence of depression), or very euphoric (like Herod, who offered half his kingdom to a young woman who danced for him) will not lead you to a good outcome. It is better to wait until you have regained emotional balance and good common sense in your life.
Wait for a reasonable amount of time. The wait provides an opportunity to reflect, ponder the advantages and disadvantages of an important decision, visualize the effect it will have on your personal life and those around you, and to hear the voice of God speaking to your heart. In contrast, haste is never a good counselor. Much less in the context of an important decision.
Listen to the advice of those who have experience. It is worth asking those who have already walked the path that you are initiating. Human beings have not changed much, we are still the same. Actually, adults have a lot they can share with you. They also fell in love, suffered mishaps, and lived through difficult situations as well as great joys. Ask them what worked for them and how they reached their goals.
Listen to God’s advice. Psalm 25 is an invitation to seek God at the time of making a decision: «Show me Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation Good and upright is the Lord; therefore He teaches sinners in the way» (verses 4-8). Do you want to serve the Lord? He will show you the best path.
Today put your life in the hands of God and ask Him to teach you to make good decisions.
