When Mr. Grimez found the knife on the table,he knew someone had been in the house with the intention of murdering him. Was it the robber leader? And why did he take the Bible instead?
But he did not hear from the thief again.
A year or so later Germany and France went to war. Grimez fell badly wounded on a battlefield and was left for dead. But a lowly fisherman heard him groan and took him in his boat across the lake to a village.
The kind rescuer sent for Mrs. Grimez, and then he and his wife moved out of their house so the couple could have it all to themselves.
When he felt better and was about to leave, Mr. Grimez asked the fisherman how much he owed him. «You’ve already paid me more than enough,» the man said.
«When?»
The fisherman went to his closet and returned with a Bible. Mrs. Grimez gasped. «It used to belong to us!»
That’s when the fisherman told them of the night when he,a bandit leader, had entered their house to kill Mr. Grimez. As he hid he’d heard Mrs. Grimez and her mother read a beautiful passage and then pray for him. He was so moved that he didn’t spring from the closet to kill Mr. Grimez when he returned, but waited until everyone was asleep before leaving his knife on the table and taking the Bible. «I wanted to find more beautiful texts,’, he told them. «Thank you for your prayer. I found God, and He changed my life forever.»
Always pray for others. You never know who might be listening.
