«The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire» (Zechariah 3:2).
WHEN HE WAS only five years old, John Wesley was trapped in the flames of a fire in his house. His mother, believing that God had saved his life, then had the certainty that the Lord had great plans for her son and thus she decided to educate him so that one day, he might be useful in the work of preaching the gospel. John Wesley himself, in one of his publications, identified himself as «a brand plucked from the fire.» In his life as a youth as well an adult, he had the habit of waking up at four o’clock in the morning every day to spend three hours reading the Holy Scriptures and praying. It is interesting how the two crucial things in the Christian life were joined together in him: understanding that God sustains us every day so we should not take anything for granted and having a firm habit of daily devotion.
The life of this Methodist Christian was very productive for the cause of Christ, and it is obvious that it was not by chance. From the beginning of his career as a preacher in 1739, multitudes went to listen to him in London, England, since he had knowledge of the things of God that opened the understanding of his hearers. The emphasis of his messages was that religion is individual and that God accepts us as His children. This brand plucked from the fire became an instrument for the cause of God.
You and I are also brands plucked from the fire. knows how many times the Lord has delivered us from risks and dangers, and it is clear is that we have come out of the darkness and ignorance that not knowing the Holy Scriptures means. Already having the knowledge of the Word of God, we have to decide to do something with this life that we have, something that makes an impact on our surroundings with the gospel. What are you doing with the second chances God is giving you? How are you using the twenty-four hours that are before you every morning? What are your study and prayer habits?
God, by His grace, love, and mercy, has given us life up to today and has made His Word available to us. His desire is to pluck us from the power of the enemy and draw us to Him for our salvation and that of others.
