WHEN JESUS SPOKE about the signs we will see in the world before His Second Coming, among other things, He said the following: «And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved» (Matthew 24: 12, 13). The news of lawlessness does not stop being published daily in the newspapers. A young man recently killed his mother in Madrid, Spain; he cut her body up and ate parts of it. In that same city, a woman killed both her parents who were already very old. In Brussels, a woman killed her five children, and very far from there, another woman, thirty-four years old, drowned her two children. Each year, thousands of women are murdered by their partners, and there is no lack of news of parents who mistreat their children, adults who sexually abuse children, young men who rape girls as a group, or teenagers who murder or commit crimes with no more reason than to record it on their cell phones and post them on social networks. If that is not lawlessness, explain to me what is.
After He had given the signs of His coming, Christ said, «When ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.» «Take ye heed, watch and pray.» God has always given men warning of coming judgments. Those who had faith in His message for their time, and who acted out their faith, in obedience to His commandments, escaped the judgments that fell upon the disobedient and unbelieving…. So now we are given warning of Christ’s second coming and of the destruction to fall upon the world. Those who heed the warning will be saved. Because we know not the exact time of His coming, we are commanded to watch.» Blessed are those servants, whom the Lord when He cometh shall find watching» (Luke 12:37). Those who watch for the Lord’s coming are not waiting in idle expectancy…. (They) are purifying their souls by obedience to the truth. With vigilant watching they combine earnest working (White, The Desire of Ages, ch. 69, p. 634).
«Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man» (Luke 21:36).
«And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. But he who endures to the end shall be saved» (Matthew 24: 12, 13).
