«For a righteous man may fall seven times and rise again, but the wicked shall fall by calamity» (Proverbs 24:16).
PERSEVERANCE
Norma Martin was a young woman living in northwestern Mexico who longed to attend school at Montemorelos University. She felt happy when she was accepted into that institution. Her first few months were amazing. She enjoyed the various youth activities, especially church worship. But a situation would change her life drastically. When she returned home to enjoy a few days of rest, the bus she was traveling in had an accident. Almost no one was seriously injured, except for Norma, who suffered very serious injuries, forcing the doctors to amputate one of her legs. «Why me?» wondered the young lady. She felt confused, though she Ousted in God.
This young girl’s life had changed too quickly. Now she needed to get into a rehab program, and she could not continue to study nutrition, medicine, or theology, as she had planned to do. Her mother felt shattered, but Norma constantly invited her to trust in Jesus. The young woman was treated at the C.H.O.C. hospital in Los Angeles (California, USA), where she was fitted with a prosthesis, thanks to which she was able to walk again. During her stay in southern California, she met Robert Palomares, a young Adventist man whom she would soon marry. Norma and Robert formed a Christian home and had two children. However, Norma did not abandon her desire to overcome, so she continued to study until she finished her nursing degree. Today she is a brilliant nurse at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Riverside (California, USA).
Having lost one of her legs did not condition Norma to give up. She did not let herself be overcome by the new scenarios that were presented to her. Rather, she placed her trust in God and went forward.
Has any tragedy hit your life? Do you intend to live off the compassion of others? Life has to go on, and it can have a lot to offer you, even if you have suffered a great loss. The truth is that if you put your life in the hands of God and you persevere, you can overcome any adversity and turn it into a blessing, as Romans 8:28 says: «And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.»
Today, pray to the Lord to give you the courage to face the battles of life with the assurance that He is at your side.
