TODAY, I PROPOSE taking our imagination to that moment when we will be in the New Earth. That will it be like? The prophet Isaiah gives us a glimpse, and this morning, I want to pause on the two aspects I get from chapter 65, verse 21 {‘They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.»
We will build houses. This, to the original hearers of the passage, sounded like glory. The Israelites had lost everything because of an invasion and subsequent deportation. However, when God restored them to their place, they were able to make a fresh start and have a future hope. Something similar will happen in the New Earth: we will be able to start over again with the hope that He gives us of no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain, because the former things have passed away (see Revelation 21:4). In the New Earth, we will enjoy all the things that God will have created for us and that we ourselves will make and tailor to our needs. Those personalized houses, whose construction will have nothing to do with being poor or rich, will be a source of delight for endless ages. Can you try to already imagine and enjoy it, by faith? will give a perspective to your life here and now.
We will plant vineyards. It is clear that we will not live idly there, but the work will not be what it is now. We will enjoy the result of our own work with all the time in the world before us. We will be able to sit down to plan (without rushing and without staying within a budget) the garden and the mansion of our dreams, and plant trees and vegetable gardens whose fruit we will take to the table. It is a picture that abounds with health, happiness, enjoyment, and blessing. That is why I like to take my mind to that moment and that place, anticipating the future life that is waiting for me if I remain faithful to God here on this earth.
Do not tell me that it is not good to imagine, to taste ahead of time the delights that are waiting for me. From my youth, I have dreamed of a little house on the top of a little hill, made from bamboo, with a crystal floor. Around it would be thousands of colorful flowers and exotic trees with branches filled with birds, and on one side, a stream with swans . . . but I know that my best dream does not compare with that reality. I long for the day when I will be able to enjoy it forever.
«They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit» (Isaiah 65:21).
