The spirit of a man will sustain him In sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?» (Proverbs 18:14, NIV).
PERSEVERANCE
Magdalena del Carmen Frida Kahlo Calder6n was born on July 6, 1907, in Mexico City. Her life was marked by difficult circumstances, since as a child she suffered from polio, which damaged her right leg and foot; at eighteen, a collision between the bus in which she was traveling and a streetcar left her body shattered: her spine was fractured in three parts; in addition, she suffered fractures in two ribs, her clavicle, and her pelvic bone; if that were not enough, her right leg was fractured in eleven parts and an iron handrail impaled her through her pelvis, fracturing the pelvic bone. She had to remain on her back for a long time during strong pains, in addition to the torture of the medicine of her time: she underwent at least thirty-two surgeries and was subject to the use of plaster corsets and stretching mechanisms. As a result of her accident, she could never have children. Her life was a constant suffering. It was then that she began to paint continuously, especially trying to reflect her sufferings. With great strength, she managed to overcome and engage herself in the intellectual life of Mexico in those years. This was how she met the person who would be her husband: the renowned muralist Diego Rivera. The influence of her husband would give a Mexican bias to her work: she painted self-portraits dressed as a peasant or indigenous woman. Throughout her life, Frida would make her existence the subject and object of her work, which would be recognized and exhibited in various parts of the world. She died in 1954 with her eternal companion, her pain.
After her death, her image and example would be taken by various political, ideological, and artistic movements. The truth is that very few people manage to integrate into life and fight for their ideals after an accident of such dimensions as the one Frida Kahlo suffered.
What can you do in the face of a tragedy? You have the option of sitting down to cry over it, licking your wounds, and awaking the pity of others. But you can also take on a different attitude and fight with the weapons you still have in your fleeting passage through this world. Whatever your condition, you can change the world and shake it with a powerful message that lasts for many years.
Ask the Lord today to help you persevere despite the tragedies that have occurred in your life.
