By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted, but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked (Proverbs 11:11).
Some time ago, a well-known private university in Mexico promoted activities to support students in need. When the president of the university was asked the reason for this course of action, he replied: «Doing good for others leaves an important mark in our lives that helps us to be better persons. We also become aware of our own nature and it allows us to understand the true priorities of our existence.»
Abusing human being debases the abuser and leaves a mark on that person’s heart that puts an end to their noblest traits. Something similar happens when you act in the same way against animals or the environment. Destroying another living being ends up destroying us.
It is us as human beings who have invented social, racial, cultural, and ethical frontiers and we insist on creating differences in order to take advantage of others. Without regard to skin color, gender, nationality, or language, we human beings are children of God (Galatians 3:26-29). To sow differences in order to obtain privileges and to submit to certain sectors of society is contrary to the Word of God. Jesus Christ came to ensure the future equality of the children of God. While we await His return, it is necessary to remember that we must treat our fellow beings as we would treat Jesus Himself, regardless of His physical traits or His social condition.
Even though Jesus Christ gave His life on the cross of Calvary to ensure that we as human beings are valued not so much by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character, rather, it will be at the second coming of Jesus (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17), and with the establishment of His kingdom, when a new system of values will be put into practice in this world. To change the world, it will take much more than just good intentions. A radical change of attitudes, values, and way of thinking is required. Something like what the prophet Ezekiel describes: «I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and, you will keep My judgments and do them» (Ezekiel 36:26, 27).
The good news is that we can start to enjoy these changes starting now, right here in this world. If we accept the Lord into our lives, He will help us transform and modify our attitudes toward others, in order to build a better society.
