» ‘Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,…’if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it’ » (Malachi 3:10).
TODAY I AM GOING to tell you about two real experiences that show two completely opposite attitudes. My hope is that the contrast between the two may be a lesson for us so that we may begin this day with a firm decision.
The first experience has to do with a child from one the Pacific Islands, who went out one day to fish and managed to catch a big fish. He went running to visit the elder of the church and said to him, «I want to return tithe to God on this fish.»
«But in order to do that, you have to sell it and set aside one tenth of that money,» the elder of the church patiently explained to him.
«You know what?’ said the child.» it’s better for you to keep this fish as my tithe and I will go to catch nine more.»
That is praising God through faith. That is a tithe with meaning. That is true thankfulness to God for the things He gives us in life. That is praise in action.
The second experience is that of an older woman. This woman worked quickly and well, so she never lacked work. However, things always went poorly economically for her. She was poor and could not find a way to get out of that poverty.
«Sister, are you returning to God one tenth of what you receive for your work?’ someone from church once asked her.
«How am I going to return one tenth if my income is barely enough for me to survive?’ was her reply.
She overlooked trusting in a very significant truth of the Bible: «I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread» (Psalm 37:25).
God is faithful, • why not put Him to the test? However, do not do it only to see what you can receive from Him, but because He loves a cheerful giver.
What better reward can there be than being a receiver of His love and a follower of the advice He gives us in His Word? He will honor those who honor Him. Decide today to honor Him with what you have. That is a good way to praise Him.
