«Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad» (Proverbs 12:25).
THE TONGUE
That morning I showed up at the entrance of the immense building accompanied by a young colporteur. The young man had put together a report that I would present to the employees of one of the most important companies in Mexico. One by one, the employees arrived. I started talking about the importance of having a positive attitude and how it affects our lives. Little by little, people’s faces began to change. The long faces turned into smiles. It was a very pleasant presentation. In the end, we presented Christian books that offered hope and gave guidelines for dealing with problems in the best way possible. People were very interested in them. I was approached by several of those present who were filled with emotion, telling me that they had never heard anything like it. There were even those who in their deep gratitude shed some tears. At times, I did not give credit to what I heard.
Perhaps the fact of living daily with the promises of Scripture made me think that the rest of the people also have a similar experience. But it’s not like that! Most only hear frustrating, negative, and pessimistic news; for them there is no hope or possibility of a better world. When we left the place, the young colporteur and I commented how much people valued a few words of encouragement.
In this world we are surrounded by bad news and negative messages. Every day, we are reminded of how poorly we dress, how far we are from the models of physical beauty, and the scarce resources we have to live comfortably. Newscasts report on wars, unemployment, fraud, and violence all over the place. Where’s the good news? Who has a positive message to face life with a good attitude?
The word gospel means «good tidings,» that is, «good news.» It is a message that brings optimism and hope. Therefore, it should not be presented in a negative, fatalistic, or prohibitive manner. It is a message that makes your heart happy! Moreover, those who have accepted the gospel must show the world such positive effects in their lives. However, sometimes Christians get carried away by the pessimistic tendencies of this world and are caught up by distress, sadness, and discouragement.
Today ask the Lord to help you understand the blessing of receiving the gospel in your life and to make your words a source of joy for those around you.
