«A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks» (Luke 6:45).
Diogenes syndrome, a disorder characterized by hoarding objects into the house, inspired the television show Hoarders on Discovery Home & Health. It is believed that it was at the beginning of the twentieth century when the brothers Langley and Homer Collyer from the Harlem district in Manhattan started to obsessively gather newspapers, phone books and all types of objects and artifacts. Throughout the years, the amount of trash filled the three floors of the house they lived in, so the brothers had to build a system of channels to be able to move across their own house It was precisely there where the two brothers lost their lives, enclosed like in a trap, suffocated under the 140 tons of junk collected over several decades. How did they manage to gather this enormous amount of waste? When did they bring in each piece of garbage? The answer is very easy: they only added a little waste every day.
This is how it happens with our mind. It is possible that, without realizing, we are introducing a little bit of small, trivial and superficial talks every day. They seem to be trifling: a futile chat on the hallways, a useless TV show, some vulgarities on the Internet, and so on until the information that has filled up our mind ends up being poor, pointless or superficial. In 1890, the American writer Ellen White wrote: «We are living in a time when everything that is false and superficial is exalted above the real, the natural, and the enduring. The mind must be kept free from everything that would lead it in a wrong direction. It should not be encumbered with trashy stories, which do not add strength to the mental powers. The thoughts will be of the same character as the food we provide for the mind.» (Child Guidance, ch. 35, p. 188).
How many times can people not explain the reason of their bad thoughts! How much they wish to be free of negative, suspicious or pessimist thoughts! And they do not realize that they have been feeding their minds with the same words on their thoughts for years.
Today, we invite you to look for the best food for your mental health. Take advantage of every chance you have to fill up your mind with joyful and hopeful topics. Remember «A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.»
