MARIA URGENTLY NEEDED surgery. Her odontologist had said that in order to stop the pain she had, she needed an operation and immediate treatment. problem was that they were too expensive for her. Maria left the doctor’s office thinking of the money she did not have, but that she needed. How would she come up with it? However, she had something in her favor that helped her not to be discouraged: she knew the Lord, the Provider of everything, the only Creator God and Sustainer. Her faith in Him was immovable, so she immediately called on Him to explain her need to Him.
Maria did the same thing as the psalmist recommends in the Holy Scriptures that we do: «Because He has inclined His ear to me, therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live” (Psalm 116:2). We know that God listens to us and therefore, we have not only the right, but the need to call on Him as long as we live. What does it mean to call on? The American Dictionary defines it as «appeal to, ask, request, apply to, petition.» Dear friend, appeal to Him in your moment of need; ask Him for help and trust that you will receive it. That was what Maria did, and God inclined His ear to her.
Like David, Maria understood that day that «the Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth» (Psalm 145:18). After calling on Him sincerely in the time of trial, Maria went into a supermarket to buy a single item she needed. Just as she was getting ready to pay, her daughter got a phone call: they were winners of a prize because of a purchase they had made days before. Maria resolved her situation with the money she received from that prize!! That is what God’s answers are like—simply spectacular and filled with creativity.
If our Lord takes the time, energy, and effort necessary to save us from our personal predicaments here on this earth, how much more will He not do to delight in saving and forgiving those who call on His name? «For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, and abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You» (Psalm 86:5). If you are used to calling on the Lord, the only true God, to help you in all you do, what could you lack? You will see great things here on this earth and you will receive salvation.
«Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved» (Acts 2:21).
