THERE WAS A WOMAN named Martha—not the Martha in the Bible, but a modern Martha. She was a woman who had no interest at all in the things of God. Even though she studied at the Adventist College of Managua in Nicaragua, she had not made a decision for the Lord. Her relatives invited her to accept Christ as her Savior, but she followed other paths. Her parents had already died when she arrived in Costa Rica for work.
Everything was going well until she began to feel ill. Then came the terrible word in her life: cancer. Martha had colon cancer. Not knowing who to turn to, she looked out of the window and, in the distance, was able to see a banner she knew very well. It was a triangle with the words «Body, Mind, and Soul.» She immediately remembered her years at the Adventist college and thought that she should seek God. She went out on the street, walking directly toward the building that had that banner: it was an Adventist church.
God put the ideal people in Martha’s path, who welcomed her to the church and made her feel loved. One member began to speak to her about Jesus and invited her to have lunch at the church after the Sabbath service. She was impressed by the lunch and by the conversation: the church member talked to her about the importance of taking care of ourselves through diet in order to prevent diseases and glorify God through our bodies and lifestyle. Everything they said seemed to be a message designed specifically for her! Finally, Martha decided to surrender herself into her Father’s arms and descended to the baptismal waters.
The next decision she made was to return to Nicaragua to begin a long and difficult path. With chemotherapy, her physical and spiritual energy gave out, until one day, she stopped feeling fear and pain. She could look at Jesus crucified and suffering, reliving each scene of Calvary. moment marked her forever: she decided to put aside her worries and promised the Lord she would work for Him. She got up from her bed and dedicated her last four years of life to preaching about the Lord. Her crown will have many, many stars for all the souls she led to the feet of Jesus.
As you can see, both health and illness are situations of life in which we can give a powerful witness of our God. May He be able to use you today.
