Jesus began wrapping up His mountainside talk with a startling announcement—we can have anything we want! All we have to do is ask. Right? Listen:
«Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
«Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!» Matthew 7:7-11
I know what you’re thinking. «Hey, I’d like to have a new computer or that cool leather jacket I saw at Penney’s.» But before you toss your allowance and head for the mall, you might want to remember what Jesus had been talking about just before the «Knock, knock» portion of His speech.
He’d been telling everyone not to concern themselves with material stuff such as clothes and food. Furthermore, He’d instructed His hearers to stop judging others and to lay up treasures «in heaven» instead of on earth. The focus of His talk was people’s minds, not their wallets.
Jesus tells us to ask for spiritual gifts, which He gladly pro vides. When we beg for wisdom, He’s there with a trunkful. You see, it’s the door to understanding that opens when we knock.
