THE POWER OF MUSIC
«The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftsmanship»
(Psalm 19:1).
Children pay close attention when we kneel in front of them, at their height. Many times when I’ve knelt that way, my little students ventured to tell me their secrets. They come close and with their warm breath and sweet little voice tell me the most important truths in their lives: that they have a new kitty, that they were invited to a birthday party, that they scraped their knee the day before, etc.
Isaac Watts wanted to teach children like them about God’s love, creation, salvation and the great sacrifice it meant for Jesus to come to this Earth, the greatest reason for this world ‘s joy.
He wrote the first hymnbook for children and, three hundred years later, one of the hymns we sing the most today teaches about God’s wonderful power.
In our hymnal it still has an English melody. Its extensive and magnificent lyrics describe the beginning of a storm and the way nature responds to it. But above all, it highlights the presence of the «supreme Creator of the Universe. »
The Creator’s greatness, the wonder of such deep love, that pierces the skies and pierced the hands of Him who gave us everlasting life, can be something we immediately recognize when seeing His handiwork in nature.
His attentive ear wants to hear our joys and sorrows, but He can also hear us when we have no more words to say. When a storm is brewing in our lives, He reminds us that He’s above everything, in control of it all.
The whole Universe worships Him and many times we take the liberty of not even speaking to Him.
I hope we can all sing today:
«There’s not a plant or flower below, but makes Thy glories known, and clouds arise, and tempests blow, by order from Thy throne; Creatures that borrow life from Thee
Are subject to Thy care; There’s not a place where we can flee, But God is present there. »
I imagine ourselves kneeling by His side, ready to confide something to Him, because He approached us and got down to our level. But when trying to tell Him something, we fall silent, awestruck, filled with gratitude and reverence in His presence. And we simply enjoy the act of praising in silence.
